Diving off Weymouth during the Heatwave

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our first diving weekend of the year. Perfect blue skies and flat calm seas for three days over bank holiday weekend in Weymouth.

On Saturday we dived the Alex Van Opstal, a very broken up wreck South of Lulworth Cove. The viz wasn’t great but we still saw loads of life including conger eels and lobsters. The second dive we did in sight of all the tourists on Durdle Door beach. A drift across a very interesting reef.

On Sunday, we dived the Binnendijk, another broken up wreck with poor visibility. The divers we shared the boat with said it was one of the best dives they’d done in a long time, I think we may need to get better at navigating to get the most from the wrecks. But we more than made up for it on the second dive catching scallops for dinner. Thanks to Michal for cooking us a feast of meal, and Lukas for shucking & cleaning the scallops.

On Monday we were joined by Jack to complete one of his bucket list dives, the M2. A submarine that tragically sunk during a training exercise in 1932. This wreck is almost fully intact and thankfully today the viz was better which made for a fantastic dive. Not only is the wreck itself impressive but there is also a lot of life, including many different species of nudibranch. Those of us that prefer wildlife to rusty metal had the best of both worlds.

It was our first diving with Jurassic Aqua Sports out of Portland. The skipper David Collins ran a great boat, with a community spirit, very informative dive briefings and pasties for lunch. We’ll definitely look to dive with them again.
